Visogrand Peak – Pinovo
Pinovo is a mountain in northern Greece across the border with FYROM. The highest peak is 2156 m and the second one is Visogrand at 2150m. These photos are from a trekking from Aetochori village (Aετοχώρι) to Visogrand after a rainy night with dense fog and strong winds above 1500 m. One side of the peak belongs to Greece and the other to FYROM and on the top, there are both marks for the peak and the border. A very detailed description of the route can be found here.
The path is very well marked and at the start there are informative signs.
Part of the path is within beech forest.
Salamanders are very common after rain and in wet environments.
Battles took place on the mountain during the first world war and trenches can still be seen. This barbed wire must have been used in such trenches.
A very steep accent is needed to reach the peak.
A quite unique characteristic of Visogrand is that both peak and Greek-FYROM border markers exist on the top.
Below Visogrand is the crossing of the path to the main Pinovo peak.
Aetochori cultural club provides a nice place for a coffee after the trekking and soon free sleeping facilities.
